Nancy Eckerson: Clark made his mark on running shoe history

In 1979 when Doug Clark graduated from the University of New Hampshire as a history major, he planned for career in teaching. But fate has a way of changing even the best laid plans, and instead, Clark's career has spanned a different kind of history, that of the modern running shoe.

When he was hired as the third research lab technician at Blue Ribbon Sports in Exeter, he stepped into a role that was previously held by Joan Benoit Samuelson. It was this lab, otherwise known as Nike East Coast, that was responsible for pioneering research in the (then) new field of biomechanics, and Clark was right in the thick of it. Instead of teaching, his career combined science, engineering and physiology, and he continues this today as CEO and founder of New England Footwear based in Newmarket....
